Cybersecurity Awareness Month: Strengthen Your Online Safety This October
October 1, 2025

At Opportunity Bank of Montana, safeguarding your financial
information is always a top priority. This year’s national theme, set by CISA
and NCA, is “Secure Our World.” It focuses on making cybersecurity
simple and accessible for everyone. Whether you're checking your balance on
your phone or managing your business accounts, a few smart steps can go a long
way toward keeping your information safe.
“Cybersecurity Awareness Month is a reminder that online
threats don’t take breaks. Taking time now to strengthen your habits can
prevent serious problems later,” said Mandy Fisher, Opportunity Bank Chief
Information Security Officer.
Here are some practical tips you can start using today:
Create Strong Passwords
Use a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols—and avoid using
the same password for multiple accounts. A password manager can help you keep
track.
“Think of your password like a toothbrush—don’t share it,
and change it regularly,” said Fisher.
Be Cautious with Emails and
Texts
If something looks suspicious, like a message asking for
personal info or urging you to click a link, pause and verify. Scammers often
pretend to be trusted sources.
Turn On Multi-Factor
Authentication (MFA)
This adds an extra layer of security, like a code sent to
your phone. It’s one of the easiest ways to protect your accounts.
“MFA is one of the simplest ways to block unauthorized
access. It’s like locking your front door and setting the alarm,” Fisher said.
Keep Your Devices Updated
Software updates often include security fixes. Set your
phone and computer to update automatically so you’re always protected.
Set Up Account Alerts
These notifications can help you recognize unusual activity
more quickly. Be sure to review your statements regularly, and if you notice
anything unexpected, contact us right away.
Use Secure Wi-Fi
Avoid using public Wi-Fi for banking or entering payment
details online. These networks are often unsecured, making it easier for
fraudsters to intercept your information. If you must, use a virtual private
network (VPN) to protect your connection.
Log Out When You’re Done
Especially on shared or public devices, logging out of your
accounts helps prevent unauthorized access.
Back Up Your Data
Regularly back up important files to a secure cloud service
or external drive. This protects you in case of a cyberattack or hardware
failure.
