HELENA—What do a trip to a theme park, a new phone, and a future
dream job have in common? They all take financial planning! Thanks to a
partnership between Southwest Montana Prevention, Growing Up Helena, and
Opportunity Bank of Montana, seventh-grade students in the Helena School
District are learning just how powerful smart money choices can be.
Volunteer instructors from Opportunity Bank visited Helena Middle
School and C.R. Anderson Middle School
in February for two Helena-area financial
literacy courses, providing them with hands-on experience. Instead of just
talking numbers, students were encouraged to think about their own financial goals,
whether that’s saving for the latest gadget, an adventure with friends, or even
a long-term dream like a car or college.
“We wanted to meet students where they’re at,” said Bethany
Coe, Lewis and Clark County Prevention Specialist. “When they see how
budgeting and planning can turn a wish into reality, they get excited about
making smart financial choices.”
Students explored topics like setting a budget, making a spending
plan, and figuring out how to prepare for unexpected expenses without giving up
their fun goals. By framing financial literacy as a way to make their dreams
happen, instructors helped students see money management as a tool for success
rather than just another school subject.
More than just financial skills, this program promotes healthy
decision-making. Learning to manage money wisely helps students avoid financial
stress, make responsible choices, and build habits that support long-term
well-being. By planning ahead and setting realistic goals, they’re developing
skills that will impact not only their wallets but also their overall health
and future stability.
This initiative is the second step in Southwest Montana Prevention
and Growing Up Helena’s Cradle to Career partnership with the Helena School
District. It builds on last year’s sixth-grade career exploration program,
which will continue annually alongside this seventh-grade financial literacy
experience.
“Opportunity Bank played a key role in making this program
possible, ensuring students gain real-world skills that will help them make
confident, informed decisions—both now and in the future,” said Coe.
